who we are

Move the Money–NYC is a campaign in support of a New York City Council resolution calling on Congress and the President to move significant funds away from the military budget in order to fund social services and to hold in-depth public hearings on the basic human needs of City residents that are unmet because of government appropriations for the Pentagon.

Our group of dedicated activists plus community groups have been working on this for five years. Resolution 747 was introduced in February 2019 by then-Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. We collected over 3,000 postcards from New Yorkers in support of the resolution and got 26 (out of 51!) city council member co-sponsors. But the City Council speaker refused to bring the resolution to a vote.

In December 2022 Council Member Carlina Rivera introduced our resolution again, renamed Resolution 423 and within a few months we got 27 co-sponsors. When Committee hearings were held on December 13, 2023, dozens of New Yorkers turned out to testify about the negative impact of city budget cuts on their lives — cuts which are happening as military spending is soaring.

Again, the City Council speaker refused to bring the resolution to a vote.

We are urging City Council Member Carlina Rivera to reintroduce the resolution and get it passed.
